French food giant is set to taste success at Pride Park

A French food giant is investing £250,000 to open a research and development centre in Derby.

Mane, which has global headquarters in Provence, is one of the world's top 10 producers of flavours and fragrances. It has taken a long lease on an office at Pullman Business Park, Pride Park, to house Mane's UK flavours operation, employing 12 people.

Once the laboratory and office open this summer, food technologists and chefs will develop flavours for products such as soft and alcoholic drinks, soups, sauces, snacks, seasonings and confectionary.

Derby was chosen because it offers a central location with good transport links to its UK customer base and its French parent company.

Bryn Williams, Mane's general manager of flavours for the UK and Ireland, said: "The office will have marketing and customer service staff and as well as research and development. There will be an area for presentations for customers,"

Mane has taken a 10 year lease on the two-storey office which will open in July.

The site was developed by Derbyshire firm Melbourne Developments, which has so far invested about £15m in the Pullman Business Park, Managing director Errol Prime said: "Phase one of the park is nearly finished with two small units still empty, we're building speculatively and there is 6,000 sq ft of new space with planning permission that's ready to build."

The deal to bring Mane to Pride Park was negotiated by Peter Milner, of Derby chartered Surveyors Milner Commercial. He said "we secured this signifIcant deal to provide Mane with their new UK regional research centre and sales office despite competition from sites throughout the East Midlands. Mane were not only satisfied that our client could deliver the right building in the right place but, having viewed a considerable number of alternative sites, our client's standard of build quality and finish is one of the highest order."
